Survival: radio broadcasts

Musicologist Carlos Barreiro-Ortiz, since the 1980's, has produced and directed a series of contemporary music radio shows. These in many occasions have included classic electro-acoustic works as well as Colombian electronic music compositions. Some of the works included compositions produced in The United States using tape or live electronics by Colombians Guillermo Gaviria, and Andres Posada (b. 1954). Mr. Barreiro since then have been the only promoter of this music in the country by producing not only the show but also a series of concerts with electro-acoustics as its subject matter. With the death of Jacqueline Nova in June of 1975, almost no trained Colombian composer explored electro-acoustic territories until the First Contemporary Music Festival of Bogota directed by Nova's student and assistant Cecilia Casas in 1989. At that time the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Cage, Kaija Saariaho, and others was performed for the first time on various concert halls in Bogota. At the same time, the first real-time computer music recital takes place with the composition Musica por Computador para el oyente desprevenido (1988) by Juan Reyes (b. 1962).
